Platelet-Rich Plasma
Advanced Treatment

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

If you are struggling with a wound that is not healing on its own, you may be a good candidate for advanced healing with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This therapy involves using your own plasma, a component of your blood, onto the wound site to promote healing.

Although this treatment has been used for decades to treat conditions ranging from arthritis to tendon injuries, it has only recently become prevalent in advanced wound care. At MedCentris, we offer PRP treatments for chronic wounds to support the body’s natural healing process.

All About PRP Therapy for Wound Healing

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an effective form of regenerative medicine for wound care. Sometimes, wounds do not heal on their own. They require outside assistance to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

Your blood consists of a liquid component called plasma, along with three solid components: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets help your body form blood clots and contain growth factors that promote the healing process. PRP therapy combines the healing power of plasma and platelets to speed up wound recovery.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

The blood in your body usually consists of about 6% platelets. Platelet-rich plasma contains a much higher concentration of platelets — about 94%. PRP also consists of between five and ten times the concentration of growth factors as normal blood.

At MedCentris, we can draw blood from your body and put it into a special machine to separate the platelets from the other blood components. We can then apply the platelet-rich plasma onto your wound site to support healing.

How Does Platelet-Rich Plasma Support Wound Healing?

PRP therapy essentially increases the concentration of platelets and growth factors in the blood surrounding your wound. As a result, your body has access to more of these healing components where it needs them, aiding the wound recovery process.

Because platelet-rich plasma for tissue regeneration consists of your own blood, plasma, and platelets, your body will not need to adjust to foreign material. The PRP can seamlessly integrate with your bloodstream. This is one of several biological treatments for tissue repair that take healing material from other parts of the body; another common one is skin grafting.

Your body has a wealth of healing power; our innovative platelet-based healing therapies can access the resources it needs to heal your chronic wound.

What To Expect During a PRP Treatment

During a PRP treatment, one of our wound specialists will draw about 10 ccs of blood from your vein. They will place the blood sample into a centrifuge machine, where it will spin for about 15 minutes. This process separates the platelets from the other components in the blood through centrifugal force.

Our wound specialist will then transfer the platelet layer onto the wound site. They may use other advanced wound dressings along with the PRP to enhance wound healing.

We may recommend you complete a few PRP treatments over several weeks. After each treatment, we will monitor your wound healing progress to determine the best next steps.
