Arterial Ulcers

Arterial ulcers can make you feel like you’re losing an uphill battle. What began as a seemingly innocent sore has now developed into a debilitating wound that simply won’t heal. Up to 10% of people in North America and Europe suffer from arterial ulcers, yet many people struggle to find permanent relief.

If you have deep, painful, non-healing wounds on your ankle, feet, heels, or lower legs, we want to offer you hope. At MedCentris, we understand the complexities of chronic wounds, including arterial ulcers. Our Wound Medicine specialists have ample knowledge and expertise in the complex conditions causing arterial (ischemic) ulcers, so we know how to employ the most advanced treatment methods for healing wounds from within.

Advanced Treatment Solutions for Arterial Ulcers

Arterial ulcers cause constant, sharp pain, inhibiting your ability to walk around and function in day-to-day life. We understand just how debilitating such wounds can be, so we offer advanced treatment solutions to give you the best shot at recovery.

With MedCentris, you’ll receive a customized treatment plan fully catered to your needs. We begin by conducting a series of tests to identify the cause of your wound.

Understanding Arterial Ulcers

Arterial ulcers are wounds that typically form in the lower extremities from a lack of nutrient-rich blood flow to the area. Rather than healing as a normal wound would, the affected area remains painful and may even grow bigger because the body fails to repair itself. Arterial ulcers may form on the outer side of the ankle bone from pressure, from friction or trauma to other parts of the legs and feet or to the tips of the toes.

You could be at a higher risk of forming an arterial ulcer if you have conditions such as high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, a history of heart attacks, and more. The symptoms of arterial ulcers include the following:

  • Sharp pain around the ulcer
  • Pain that worsens at night
  • Dead skin around or inside the ulcer
  • Skin discoloration or hair loss around the ulcer
  • Inability to heal

Our Wound Medicine experts understand the complexity involved in arterial ulcers. We can attempt to address the underlying conditions causing the arterial ulcer to hopefully aid in healing the wound while preventing it from occurring again.

State-of-the-Art Arterial Ulcer Treatments

We provide a range of advanced arterial ulcer treatments designed to prevent infection, improve blood flow to the area, and promote healing. In some arterial ulcer cases, we recommend negative pressure wound therapy to promote blood flow and tissue formation while keeping the wound clean.

We also offer numerous debridement treatments which may include sharp debridement, ultrasonic debridement, and biosurgical debridement. Our debridement treatments remove nonviable tissue cells from the wound to help promote the healing process. Aside from negative pressure therapy and debridement, our wound centers provide an array of advanced treatment options, which may include the following:

  • Synthetic skin substitutes
  • Platelet-rich plasma infusions
  • Lymphedema management
  • Total contact casts
  • Vascular screening
  • And more
