Lymphedema Management

If you suffer from lymphedema, you know the immense discomfort and pain that can result from this chronic condition. Your doctor may have told you the disheartening news that there is no cure for lymphedema.

While it is true that lymphedema has no cure, several effective treatments and therapies can alleviate symptoms and allow you to live a more normal lifestyle with this condition. At MedCentris, we offer innovative therapies for lymphedema management. Let us create a personalized treatment plan that effectively targets your symptoms and eases your discomfort.

Comprehensive Lymphedema Treatment From MedCentris

As many as 200,000 people receive a lymphedema diagnosis each year in the U.S. If left unmanaged, lymphedema can cause wounds and skin infections, sepsis, or even cancer. This chronic illness also takes a mental toll on patients, as living each day with pain and discomfort can be incredibly discouraging.

At MedCentris, we offer comprehensive treatments for managing fluid retention in lymphedema and reducing discomfort. If your condition feels hopeless, our caring wound specialists can provide hope through innovative lymphedema management catered to your condition.

What Is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling between the skin and muscles. While it normally occurs in the arms and legs, it can also affect the chest, neck, and genitals.

This condition often forms after damage to the lymphatic system, which can occur due to:

  • Cancer and cancer treatments
  • Deep cuts or bruises
  • Infections

Another type of lymphedema, primary lymphedema, is a hereditary condition without a clear cause.

This condition leads to an accumulation of lymphatic fluid that your body would otherwise drain through the lymphatic system. Instead, this fluid pools between the muscles and skin, causing swelling and other symptoms, such as the following:

  • Aching and discomfort
  • A feeling of fullness or heaviness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Lack of movement near the joints
  • Trouble fitting clothes in one area
  • Texture changes to the skin

Treatment for Chronic Lymphedema

At MedCentris, we recognize that a range of treatments can help relieve symptoms of lymphedema. We will evaluate your symptoms and health history to determine a treatment plan that works for you.

Your personalized lymphedema management plan may include any of the following swelling reduction therapies and treatments:

  • Compression Therapy: utilization of a multilayer bandaging and/or Velcro compression garments to help move the fluid out of the effected area is vital. Once there is improvement in swelling, wearing a compression garment will help prevent further swelling.
  • Skin and Nail Care: maintaining good skin moisture balance and keeping nails trimmed and cleaned may prevent infection.
  • Exercise and Movement: both will help with circulation and move lymph fluid which improves lymphatic drainage.
  • Pneumatic Compression Pump Therapy: another treatment option where a garment is worn over the area of the body affected with lymphedema. Inside the sleeve or vest are multiple chambers, like balloons, that inflates one after the other to move lymph fluid. Using a pump in addition to your compression garments can help improve swelling and the feelings of heaviness and achiness.
  • Lymph Massage: Also known as Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) - a part of decongestive lymphatic therapy that you may be considered a candidate. MLD is a gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymph vessels to move fluid from the effected area which is performed by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist for which we can refer you to.

We will teach and advise you to wear compression sleeves between appointments to continue encouraging lymphatic drainage.

If lymphedema has caused wounds, we offer a range of advanced wound-healing therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, medical-grade honey, seaweed wound dressings, and more.
